8. Managing Winning Positions: Scaling Out, Trailing Stops & Letting Runners Run

Part of Chapter 10: Risk Management Math & Capital Preservation

Core Learning Concepts
  • The psychological difficulty of holding winning trades
  • The 50/50 Scale-Out Rule: Taking partial profit at 2R and moving stop to breakeven
  • Trailing stops behind Higher Lows to capture parabolic macro trends

Novice traders cut their winners quickly out of fear of losing paper profits, but let their losers run in hope of a reversal. To build true wealth in crypto, you must invert this behavior: cut losers immediately and let winners run.

Use the 50/50 Scale-Out Rule: When your trade reaches a 2:1 Risk-to-Reward ratio (2R), take profit on 50% of your position. Simultaneously, move your stop loss on the remaining 50% to your exact entry price (breakeven).

You now have a completely risk-free 'free roll' trade: even if price reverses back to your entry, you locked in a 1R net profit. You can now trail your stop loss behind key 4-Hour swing lows on the remaining 50% 'runner' to capture multi-thousand-dollar macro expansions.

Institutional Execution Insight

The biggest winners in your trading career will come from that 50% runner that you let ride for weeks during a parabolic bull market trend.
