1. Central Limit Order Book (CLOB) Architecture & Matching Engines

Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow

Core Learning Concepts
  • Price-Time Priority (FIFO: First-In, First-Out) matching algorithms
  • The Spread: Bid-Ask gap and the continuous double auction
  • Colocation and latency arbitrage in modern crypto exchanges

Every major centralized cryptocurrency exchange (Binance, Coinbase, Bybit) operates a Central Limit Order Book (CLOB). A CLOB is an electronic queue that organizes all unexecuted limit orders sorted by price and timestamp.

Under Price-Time Priority (FIFO), orders with the best price are executed first. If two traders place limit orders at the exact same dollar price, the order submitted first in time receives execution priority.

The spread is the difference between the highest price a buyer is willing to pay (Best Bid) and the lowest price a seller is willing to accept (Best Ask). High-frequency trading (HFT) market makers constantly quote both sides of the spread, profiting from the round-trip differential while providing liquid execution.

Institutional Execution Insight

In low-liquidity altcoins, the bid-ask spread can widen to 1% or more. Never use market orders on low-cap coins; always use limit orders to avoid paying an exorbitant spread tax to market makers.
