2. Passive Limit Orders vs Aggressive Market Orders: How Prices Actually Move
Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow
- Makers vs Takers: Providing liquidity vs demanding liquidity
- The Golden Law of Order Flow: Limit orders do NOT move price
- Slippage mechanics: How aggressive market orders consume resting book depth
One of the most foundational misunderstandings among retail traders is how prices move. Limit orders (resting orders on the book) NEVER move the price; they act purely as barriers that absorb incoming orders.
The only thing that moves the market price is an Aggressive Market Order (Taker). When a buyer submits a market order, the matching engine matches it against the best available resting limit ask.
If a buyer wants to purchase 100 BTC, but there are only 20 BTC resting at $95,000, the remaining 80 BTC will fill at higher prices—$95,010, $95,020, and $95,050—until the entire order is filled. This consumption of resting book depth is what physically drives the market price upward.
\text{OBI} = \frac{\sum \text{Bids} - \sum \text{Asks}}{\sum \text{Bids} + \sum \text{Asks}}Mathematical Explanation: Values range from -1.0 (100% Ask dominance) to +1.0 (100% Bid dominance). Strong positive OBI indicates heavy passive support.
If you see a massive 500 BTC bid on the order book, price cannot drop past that level until aggressive sellers hit the market with at least 500 BTC of sell market orders to consume that wall.
