9. Iceberg Orders: How Institutional Desks Execute Multi-Million Dollar Positions
Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow
- Iceberg order mechanics: Visible display size vs hidden reserve size
- Algorithmic replenishment: Auto-reloading the top of the book upon fill
- Detecting icebergs through repeated fills at the exact same price tick
Large institutions cannot reveal their true size on the public order book. If an institutional fund placed a visible 2,000 BTC sell limit order, buyers would vanish, and the market would front-run them by dumping prices ahead of their order.
To prevent this, institutions use Iceberg Orders. An iceberg order displays only a tiny visible fragment on the book (e.g., 5 BTC). As soon as that 5 BTC is filled, the matching engine instantly and automatically replenishes it with another 5 BTC from the hidden reserve.
To the untrained eye, it looks like a small 5 BTC order. But as traders buy into it, it refills dozens or hundreds of times. By monitoring Time & Sales, you can spot total volume exceeding the displayed book size by 10x or 50x, exposing the hidden iceberg.
If you observe price struggling to tick higher despite 100+ BTC of market buys hitting a specific level with no change in the best ask, an iceberg sell order is active. Step aside and wait for the iceberg to finish filling.
