3. Level-2 Depth Charts & Bid/Ask Walls: Spotting Genuine Size vs Spoofing
Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow
- Cumulative market depth visualization (Green Bid Slope vs Red Ask Slope)
- The art of Spoofing: Placing fake large limit orders to manipulate retail sentiment
- Order cancellation velocity: Detecting walls that pull right before execution
Level-2 market depth charts display cumulative resting limit orders extending away from the mid-price. A steep green slope indicates deep buying support; a steep red slope indicates dense sell resistance.
However, because limit orders can be cancelled at zero cost before being filled, whales and algorithmic manipulators frequently engage in 'Spoofing'.
A spoofer places a massive 300 BTC buy wall to trick retail traders into believing strong support exists, inducing them to buy. The moment price trades within a few ticks of the wall, the spoofer instantly cancels the order and dumps their position onto the retail buyers.
A genuine wall stays on the order book even when price trades directly into it and fills the first 10% to 20% of its size. If a wall vanishes milliseconds before price touches it, it was pure spoofing manipulation.
