5. Time & Sales (The Tape): Reading Prints, Speed & Split Orders
Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow
- The Time & Sales window: Real-time stream of executed transactions
- Tape Speed: Velocity of prints as an indicator of aggressive market participation
- Block trades and algorithmic order slicing (TWAP execution)
The Time & Sales window—historically known on Wall Street as 'the tape'—shows every single completed transaction: timestamp, execution price, size, and trade direction (green for ask fills, red for bid fills).
Reading the tape allows you to perceive market energy directly. When price reaches a key level, observe the tape speed: if prints are flashing by so fast the screen blurs with massive green blocks, aggressive institutional buyers are eating through all available liquidity.
Conversely, if price creeps higher with only small, intermittent retail prints (0.01 BTC, 0.05 BTC) and tape velocity slows to a crawl, buying interest is drying up.
Look for clusters of identical trade sizes occurring at regular second intervals (e.g., 5 BTC every 3 seconds). This is the hallmark of an institutional TWAP (Time-Weighted Average Price) execution algorithm quietly buying size.
