8. Delta Divergences: Spotting Hidden Absorption Before Reversals
Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow
- Delta Divergence: Price makes a new low while CVD makes a higher low (or vice versa)
- Passive Absorption: When a limit order wall absorbs all aggressive selling without budging
- Exhaustion reversals: The exact moment aggressive sellers give up
A Delta Divergence is one of the most reliable reversal patterns in market microstructure. It occurs when aggressive market orders fail to translate into price movement.
Consider this scenario: Price drops to test support, and CVD plummets sharply to new multi-day lows, indicating that thousands of market sell orders are hitting the book. However, price fails to make a new low—it holds firm and wicks upward.
What happened? A massive institutional buyer placed a passive limit bid wall that completely absorbed every single market sell order without letting price slip. As soon as the sellers run out of capital, price rockets higher in an aggressive short squeeze.
Whenever CVD is screaming downward but price refuses to go down, DO NOT short. You are hitting your head against an institutional whale wall. Look for long entries as soon as the selling pressure dries up.
