7. Order Flow Imbalance: Pinpointing Aggressive Buyers Overpowering Asks

Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow

Core Learning Concepts
  • Diagonal bid/ask comparison inside footprint candles
  • Diagonal Imbalance ratio (typically 300% or 400% threshold)
  • Trapped traders: Buying at the exact top wick with zero follow-through

Inside a footprint chart, orders are matched diagonally: aggressive market buyers at the Ask (price P) are compared against aggressive market sellers at the Bid (price P - 1 tick).

A Diagonal Imbalance occurs when buying volume exceeds selling volume by a predetermined ratio (e.g., 3:1 or 4:1). A stack of 3 or more consecutive bullish imbalances inside a candle proves aggressive institutional buying.

Trapped buyers occur when a massive buying imbalance appears at the very high of a candle wick, but the candle closes red below that level. Those buyers are immediately underwater; their panic stop-loss sells will fuel an aggressive downward cascade.

Institutional Execution Insight

When you see stacked buying imbalances at the top of a resistance level followed by an immediate red reversal candle, enter short immediately. The trapped buyers have no choice but to liquidate.
