6. Footprint Charts & Volume Profile: Decoding the Point of Control (POC)
Part of Chapter 08: Market Microstructure & Level-2 Order Flow
- Footprint (Cluster) charts: Visualizing bid/ask volume inside each candle body
- Volume Profile: Volume traded at each horizontal price level
- Point of Control (POC), Value Area High (VAH), and Value Area Low (VAL)
A Footprint Chart replaces the traditional opaque candlestick with an x-ray of the candle's internal auction, showing the exact quantity of contracts traded at the bid and ask for every single price tick.
Volume Profile plots horizontal volume bars across price. The Point of Control (POC) is the single price level where the highest volume of trading took place during the selected period.
The Value Area represents the price range where 70% of all trading volume occurred (bounded by VAH and VAL). When price deviates outside the Value Area without high volume, it frequently reverts back to the POC like a rubber band.
Virgin POCs (VPOCs)—Points of Control from previous days or weeks that price has not yet retested—act as incredibly strong institutional magnets. Keep them marked on your charts as high-probability targets.
